SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk eighth-grade girls basketball team placed third in the Division 4/5 competition at the Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament in Stevens Point and Waupun on April 9-10.

This tournament, which was organized by The Great Northwest Basketball League, brought together 87 of the top eighth-grade girls basketball teams from across Wisconsin. State champions were crowned in four divisions: Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 and Division 4/5, based on the enrollment of the high school into which each team feeds.

Black Hawk went 5-1 in the tournament. In pool play, Black Hawk defeated Mishicot 39-25 and Gilman 48-22. Then it defeated Owen-Withee 49-31 in the round of 16 and Cuba City 50-29 in the quarterfinals. Black Hawk suffered its lone defeat in the semifinals to Cochrane-Fountain City 37-32 before defeating Augusta 34-21 in the third-place game.

Melrose-Mindoro defeated Cochrane-Fountain City 38-35 to win the championship.

The Black Hawk team is coached by Mike Flanagan and assistant coaches, Curt Leuzinger and Angie Butler. Bailey Butler, Hannah Butler and Natalie Leuzinger were named to the all-tournament team.

The Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament is an annual event, pitting the top community-based teams in the state against each other. The tournament is organized by size of communities, much like the WIAA state tournaments.
