SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk Warriors entered Tuesday's WIAA Division 5 playoff opener as the clear-cut favorite. And why shouldn't they be? The unbeaten Warriors have been ranked No. 1 all season according to both the Associated Press and WisSports.net Coaches polls. And Madison Country Day had just one win on the season.
"Our big thing is, how do you not get up for a tournament game?" Black Hawk head coach Mike Flanagan said.
The Warriors responded to the question in unison and routed Madison Country Day 96-21.
"I felt like we did some good things early," Flanagan said.
Black Hawk led 67-7 at the half and had 11 players score in the game.
"We got a lot of kids in the books, which is always nice," Flanagan said.
Freshman Bailey Butler led all scorers with 24 points. Hannah Butler scored 17 for Black Hawk, Natalie Leuzinger ended up with 14, and Abby Argall had 8.
The Warriors (23-0) now face familiar foe Albany, which beat Juda 63-43 Tuesday. Despite beating Albany by an average of 35 points in both matchups this season, Flanagan is not taking the Comets lightly.
"Albany's size is formidable. They have three kids that present mismatches every time they are on the court," Flanagan said. "And they are well coached. Coach (Derik) Doescher is one of the best in the business. We need to come out ready because I don't think Albany is planning on losing."
In other action, third-seeded Central Wisconsin Christian defeated 14th-seeded Pecatonica 62-17 Tuesday.
