BELLEVILLE - Sophomore Marissa Berg continued her torrid hitting by going 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Monticello softball team to an 11-9 victory against Belleville in a non-conference game Thursday.

Senior Karlie Klossner also drove in three runs by going 2-for-3 and freshman Courtney Leuzinger had two hits and knocked in two runs as the Ponies built an 8-1 lead after four innings.

A three-run fifth inning by the Wildcats trimmed the lead to 8-4, but the Ponies responded with three runs in the sixth to withstand Belleville's five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth. Berg, Klossner, Leuzinger, sophomore Claire Geitzel and freshman Jordan Garrison combined for 13 of the Ponies' 17 hits.

"We needed it," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said of the outburst.

The Ponies (3-0) overcame five errors.

"It was our worst defensive game of the year," Garrison said. "We threw the ball around, missed cutoffs, and had a few mental errors. It's better now than when conference starts."
