Beloit Memorial upends Monroe

BELOIT - Monroe senior Kylan Helmeid scored a team-high 18 points and made four 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough as Beloit memorial knocked off the Cheesemakers 58-49 Saturday, Nov. 30.

Helmeid made four of the Cheesemakers' seven 3-pointers. Monroe senior Jake Hirsbrunner scored 13 points and hit three 3-pointers.

The killer, Monroe coach Pat Murphy said, was the second quarter where Beloit Memorial outscored the Cheesemakers 17-6.

"The trouble spot for the whole game was we gave up too many easy shots," Murphy said. "We have to do a lot better job of stopping penetration and making it harder to score."

One of the Cheesemakers' defensive goals is limiting teams to 45 points or less. The Cheesemakers are giving up 63.5 points per game this year and are off to an 0-2 start. Beloit Memorial shot 51 percent compared to 32 percent for the Cheesemakers.

"We preach defense and not to get one of our defensive goals is troublesome," Murphy said. "At the varsity level, if you letdown and don't box out every time, you will get beat up."

Monroe senior Charlie Kind scored eight points and the Cheesemakers were just 8 of 16 at the free throw line.

"One of our goals is to get three guys in double figures and we didn't hit that goal," Murphy said.
