BELLEVILLE - Thunderstorms that rolled through southern Wisconsin wrecked havoc on the Sugar River Raider soccer invite Friday.
The soccer quad was canceled Friday due to lightning. The seventh annual Raider Invite was going to feature two Badger Conference teams in Oregon (Badger South) and DeForest (Badger North), as well as Palmyra-Eagle. The invite was also going to be Sugar River's second annual "Pink Out" to raise money for cancer research.
Sugar River was set to open the tournament with a game against Palmyra-Eagle. As soon as both teams shook hands, the game was postponed due to lightning.
Repeated attempts to get on the field to play were short circuited, again due to lightning. After a 1 hour, 15 minute delay, Sugar River coach John Ziperski talked with other coaches and Oregon and DeForest left. The Raiders still tried to get the game in against Palmyra-Eagle.
After the delay reached 1-hour, 35 minutes, Sugar River and Palmyra-Eagle took to the field.
The Raiders received a goal from Katie Viney on an assist from Hannah Kernen in the first minute. The two teams played for a total of 3 minutes, 40 seconds before officials stopped the game for good because of lightning.
