MONONA - Monroe sophomore Noah Becker shot an 8-over-par 79 to finish in a seven-way tie for 12th place at the Monona Grove Invitational Thursday.
At the same invitational last year, Becker shot a 115. The 36-hole improvement for Becker compared to last year was not a surprise for Monroe golf coach Braden Rindy. Becker was just two shots away from finishing in the top 10. He tied Janesville Craig's Nik Sitter, Janesville Parker's Mitch Vogel, Oregon's Ryan Crandell, Reedsburg's Ben Fuhrmann and Waunakee's Sean Murphy and Joe Guerrera for 12th.
"He's a much more solid ball striker," Rindy said of Becker. "He worked all winter. This is the benefits of that. If a kid wanted to know if practice paid off, he's a prime example."
Monroe finished the
invitational in 13th place out of 25 teams with a 352, which was 31 strokes better than the team did in the season opener at Oregon. Marquette won the team title with a score of 3-02 over runner-up Waunakee (316). Janesville Parker's Matt Zimmerman shot a 1-under-par 70 to win medalist honors.
Monroe junior Jack Rogerson had the team's second-best score of 83. Senior Collyn Wilde carded an 86. Sophomore teammate Connor Allen shot a 104, and sophomore Stuart Sathoff shot a 124.
