ALBANY - Junior Nicki Becker tossed a two-hitter to propel the Juda-Albany softball team to a 2-1 season-opening win over Lena-Winslow on Monday.

Becker gave up one run, struck out 10 and walked two. Juda-Albany junior Haley Freitag went 2-for-2 to lead the Panthers.

"It was a really sound defensive game," Juda-Albany coach Bill Davis said. "I was really happy with our defense. Offensively, we are not there yet. We put the ball in play. Hopefully, our hitting comes around with the more live pitching we see."

The Panthers scored one run in the first to jump out to an early lead. Senior Alexis Goecks reached on an error and stole second. Senior Chelsea Burkhalter moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Senior Sara Jordan then knocked in the run on a fielder's choice.

In the second inning, Freitag singled. She scored on junior Sammi Detra's fielder's choice that gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Orangeville 8, Argyle 1

ARGYLE - The Orioles got a solid pitching performance from junior Taylor Mathys, but Orangeville topped Argyle in the season opener.

Mathys pitched five innings and gave up three runs on five hits. She struck out one and walked three.

Argyle junior Ashley Bruehlman had an RBI double in the first inning to give the Orioles a short-lived 1-0 lead. Orangeville scored two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Broncos broke the game open with a five-run sixth.

Argyle junior Kaylie Berget pitched two innings and gave up four runs on nine hits. She struck out two and didn't issue a walk.

"I think we played pretty well," Argyle coach Heidi Ganshert said. "Our pitchers pitched a decent game. Orangeville is a great team. We still need to work on our hitting."
