REEDSBURG - Errors came back to bite the Monroe High School baseball team in an 8-7 nonconference loss to Reedsburg on Tuesday.
The Cheesemakers (1-3, 0-2 Badger South) committed seven errors in the game, and the Beavers rallied with a four-run seventh to overcome a 7-4 deficit.
In the seventh, Reedsburg junior Benjamin Kellner hit a dribbler in front of the pitcher's mound. Monroe junior relief pitcher Hunter Weckerly fielded the ball and overthrew first base. With the wild throw sailing into right field, the Beavers scored to tie the game at 7. Reedsburg's Chad Mazur then lined a game-winning RBI single to left to give the Beavers the comeback victory.
"Any time you score seven runs that should be enough to get in the win column," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "When you have seven errors that is just too much. We showed some signs. There are defensively some things we have to work on. We have to cut back on those errors."
Monroe junior Hogan Edwards pitched 61⁄3 innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked one.
"He (Edwards) pitched fantastic and good enough to win the game," Huffman said. "We had five errors in the first couple of innings. We spotted them some runs early on."
Monroe senior Garrett Gogin and Weckerly each went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Junior teammate Carter Sawdey was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
