BEAVER DAM - A matchup against the favorite to win the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference proved to be a challenge for the Monroe girls basketball team as Beaver Dam rolled to an 80-65 win over the Cheesemakers on Saturday.

Beaver Dam hit six of its seven 3-pointers in the first half. The Cheesemakers had 15 turnovers in the first half and Beaver Dam (7-1) jumped out to a 46-28 lead at the half.

Beaver Dam junior Cassidy Trotter scored a game-high 22 points.

Beaver Dam sophomore Maryn Ferron scored 12 points and made three 3-pointers. Beaver Dam's 6-3 freshman Aly Van Loo added 10 points and 6-2 sophomore Afton Bartol also had 10 points.

"It was a combination of those two things," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said of Beaver Dam's shooting and the Cheesemakers' turnovers that led to the 18 point deficit at the half.

Beaver Dam, a sectional qualifier that lost to state qualifier Cedarburg last year, led by as many as 26 points in the second half. Monroe (1-4, 0-2 Badger South) rallied and cut the Beaver's lead to 12 points with 3 minutes, 30 seconds to go in the second half.

The Cheesemakers had just five turnovers in the second half as they made their comeback.

"I was really proud of the effort of our kids to make a run and cut it to 12," Mathiason said. "We stuck in it. This game could have gone the other way."

Monroe sophomore Sydney Mathiason scored a team-high 15 points. Senior Hannah Vetterli and freshman Sydney Hilliard each added 14 points.

Juniors Lexi Hilliard and Jordan Hirsbrunner each chipped in seven points. Freshman Emily Benzschawel added six points.

Mathiason sees Beaver Dam being in the same class as the top teams such as Madison Edgewood, Stoughton and Monona Grove in the Badger South.

"I think while they are young they will be able to make a push in the playoffs," Mathiason said. "They are picked to be the top team in the Little Ten Conference."

Monroe will gear up to host Fort Atkinson at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

"At this point of our development obviously everyone wants to win," Mathiason said. "It's about playing up to our ability. All we can do is keep pushing to get better. We keep getting better and have been more competitive."
