MONROE - Just two days after getting blanked by Milton, the Cheesemakers exploded for 16 runs in five innings, knocking off Fort Atkinson 16-6 Thursday.
"It was just one of those nights where everything was hit hard," Monroe head coach Dustin Huffman said. "Usually we get some hits to bloop and fall in, but today we had solid contact."
The heart of the Cheesemakers' order, the No. 3, 4 and 5 hitters, went a combined 9-for-10 with three doubles, a home run and 14 RBIs.
Cleanup hitter Kramer Henning led the attack going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and six RBIs. Henning roped a three-run homer in the second inning and added a bases loaded, three-RBI double in the fifth.
Marty was 3-for-3 with four runs, a double and four RBIs and Taylor Riese was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a double. Michael Turek, the team's nine-hitter, was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs. Leadoff man Dylan Schwitz also doubled.
"We like to preach to the guys that all it takes is for one guy to get going and then it's contagious, and that's what kind of happened tonight. Hopefully that carries over into Saturday (doubleheader vs. Brodhead-Juda) and into next week," Huffman said.
Marty took the win on the hill, allowing nine hits, five earned runs and three strikeouts with no walks through five innings. Fort Atkinson used four different pitchers, none of which found much success, as they allowed 14 hits.
The Blackhawks (1-13, 0-9 Badger South) scored an unearned run to open the first and plated three runs in the third and two more in the fourth.
"Give Fort credit. They sat back on (Marty's) curveball. They had a home run in that third inning. Then Mitch started locating his fastball and got some groundouts and righted the ship a little bit," Huffman said.
Monroe (8-6, 5-4) scored two runs in the first and put up six in the second to take an 8-1 lead. The Cheesemakers added two more runs in the fourth before closing out the game with a six-run fifth. Cory Kundert ended the game with a two-out single in the fifth with runners at first and third.
"(Wednesday) in practice we tried to take it easy. We had the guys try to keep their chins down when hitting, stay loose and relaxed and just see the ball," Huffman said.
Monroe is one win away from matching last year's total and four wins for their 2006 total (12).
"The guys worked really hard in the offseason at open gyms. We had them work on fundamentals and defense and they bought into it. It's starting to show up in games. We have talented juniors and our seniors have gotten better from last year," Huffman said. "It's good for the kids, especially the seniors."
