MINNEAPOLIS - Monroe High School graduate Matt Barrett took sixth place in the NCAA Division I class at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Barrett, a senior captain for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, was one of three Gophers to finish the 8K course in the top six out of a field of 204 runners.
Minnesota was led by five-time All-American and returning Big Ten champion, junior Hassan Mead (first) with a time of 24 minutes, 37 seconds, followed by All-NCAA Midwest Region honoree, junior Ben Blankenship (fourth) in 24:57, and Barrett (sixth) also an NCAA Midwest Region honoree and academic All Big Ten honoree in 25:01. Redshirt freshmen Pieter Gagnon (32nd) in 25:33, and Kevin Lachowitzer (59th) in 26:06, rounded out the scoring.
Despite the fact that the Gophers No. 4 and No. 5 runners were held out due to injury, Minnesota still managed a fourth place finish as a team behind Iowa State, Oklahoma, and Duke. The Gophers are currently ranked 17th in the NCAA Division I polls.
