MONONA - Monroe sophomore Taylor Barrett had a scare after tweaking her knee at the Waterloo Invite earlier this season.
Barrett missed about one week, but she has come back strong and finished second place in the high jump after clearing 5-feet at the Monona Grove Invitational on Saturday.
"We were a little nervous to see how she would be," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "We are pleased to see her back to where she should be."
Sophomore Tre Voegeli finished third in the pole vault (9-0).
"She has kind of been stuck at 8-6 and trying to get over that hump," Miller said. "It was really good for her to make 9-feet. There is a ton of potential there. She has a bright future ahead of her as a sophomore."
The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Mackenzie Hesgard, Lauren Werth, Voegeli and Maria Eberle took third with a time of 52.25 seconds.
"We finally got a sprint relay with a quality time," Miller said.
The Cheesemakers have sent a 400 relay team to state the last four years, but Miller said a Monroe appearance in 2012 isn't a given.
"We still have a lot of work to do," Miller said. "You feel like it should almost be automatic. At this point, there is a lot more that goes into being a state qualifier than just thinking you will run a fast time."
Monroe will host the Badger South Conference meet on Tuesday. The boys pole vault is set to start at 3:30 p.m. Miller said the local stage will be a great opportunity for his squad.
"It's a meet to showcase what you have done all year and all the hard work in front of your home fans on your home track," Miller said. "It makes conference more special when you can have it at home."
