Barneveld stops Black Hawk

BARNEVELD - Senior guard Hannah Whitish scored a game-high 19 points and hit a key 3-pointer to help Barneveld, the top-ranked team in Division 5, knock off Black Hawk 56-38 Tuesday night.

It marked the first conference loss for Black Hawk (7-5, 4-1 Six Rivers East) this season. The Warriors remain in second place in the conference.

The teams were tied at 10 with about 9 minutes left in the first half. The Eagles closed the first half with an 18-4 run. Whitish hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 28-14 lead at the half.

Barneveld outscored Black Hawk 28-24 in the second half.

"She (Whitish) made some plays you don't see many kids in our conference make," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said of the Nebraska recruit. "It's hard to account for her. I thought our defense was pretty good overall. It's something to build on hopefully."

Black Hawk senior Aleigha Sigafus scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds. Senior teammate Tatum Jackson added seven points.

Barneveld's Mia Whitish added 10 points.



Durand 55, Juda 36

JUDA - Playing without junior Sara Jordan due to a sore back, Juda got a team-high 13 points from sophomore MacKenzie Byrne but lost a nonconference game to Durand (Ill.).

Juda (6-6, 2-2 Six Rivers East) trailed by seven points at the half, 26-19.

Durand outscored the Panthers 29-17 in the second half.

"Durand is a really good team," Juda coach Curt Brown said. "We just went cold in the second half. They took advantage of their size inside."

Durand improves to 15-5.



Brodhead 71, Jefferson 44

JEFFERSON - Senior Kylie Moe scored a game-high 30 points to power the Cardinals to a nonconference win over Jefferson (4-7).

Moe made 16 of 17 free throws to lead the Cardinals, who improve to 11-1.

Brodhead senior Amber Pickel and sophomore Erin Nyhus each added 16 points.

The Cardinals outscored Jefferson at the free-throw line 31-7.
