BARNEVELD - The Pecatonica baseball team was on the brink of beating Six Rivers East Conference co-leader Barneveld when coach Jim Strommen opted to intentionally walk Carson Carmody.
Barneveld's Wes Williams then delivered a game-winning two-run single in the seventh off Pecatonica's Drew Schliem to give the Golden Eagles a thrilling comeback win over the Vikings Monday, April 29.
"His run didn't mean anything," Strommen said of Carmody. "With second and third we wanted to set up the force out at home. (Williams) just hit it where our fielders weren't. That is the way it goes sometimes. It's a game we should have won."
Schliem pitched six innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. He struck out nine and walked two. Drew kept us in the game," Strommen said. "He pitched really well. The five errors makes him end up making more pitches."
Pecatonica (3-5, 2-4 Six Rivers East) started five freshmen. Pecatonica senior Jake Scoville went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Scoville is battling a hip flexor injury but isn't expected to miss any games.
"He gutted it out," Strommen said. "He is kind of playing on one leg for us."
Barneveld's Dustin Hodgson pitched three innings and gave up three runs on four hits. He struck out five and walked one. Carmody pitched four innings in relief and gave up one run on one hit. He struck out three and walked one."
