BLACK RIVER FALLS - The Avalanche Bantam A team brought home the championship trophy Sunday from an eight-team tournament.
The Avalanche defeated the Baldwin Blackhawks 11-4 in the first game Saturday. Hayden Roth was the first to score in the first period with assists from Tessa Janecke and Anika Einbeck. The Blackhawks added three goals in the second period to the Avalanche's five. In the third period, the Blackhawks added one goal while the Avalanche found the back of the net five more times. Tessa Janecke scored four goals in the game. Adding goals were Roth for one more, Payton Stauffacher, Travis Einbeck, Cade Janecke, and Anika Einbeck (2). Earning assists on those goals were Tessa Janecke (2), Anika Einbeck, Roth (3), Luke Kuberski, Cade Janecke, Travis Edmunds and Stauffacher (2). The Avalanche outshot the Blackhawks 49-14.
In the winner's bracket, the Avalanche defeated the Black River Falls Tigers 6-1. Roth once again was first to score. With 9 seconds left in the first period, Stauffacher fired a shot from center ice to give the Avalanche a 2-1 lead. In the second period, the Avalanche added goals from Roth, Edmunds (assist by Kuberski) and Tessa Janecke (assist by Roth). Edmunds added one more in the third period on a pass from Cade Janecke. The Avalanche outshot the Tigers 27-11.
In the championship Sunday, the Avalanche defeated the River Falls Wildcats in a 4-3 overtime thriller. Edmunds scored two goals on assists by Cade Janecke in the first period. Roth scored on an assist by Anika Einbeck in the second period to give the Avalanche a 3-2 lead. Late in the third period, the Wildcats pulled their goalie, and with 1:32 left, they tied the game at 3. With 56 seconds left in a 5-minute, sudden-death overtime, Tessa Janecke scored the winning goal. Goaltender Heath Bear recorded 40 saves.
