MONROE - The Monroe Avalanche U-16 Midget team finished third overall at the state tournament held at SLICE Satuday and Sunday.

The Avalanche knocked off Wisconsin Dells Saturday morning, 12-0. Kyle Bruce pitched a shutout in goal, Matt Bush had a hat trick and Jon Becker added three assists in the win.

In Monroe's second game against SHAW, a Milwaukee area team, the Avalanche won 5-3. Sunday morning against Kenosha, the Avalanche fell, 6-1.

Due to the point system, which determines who will play in the state title game, a team gets a point for each period won and two points for winning the game, which means five points total are at stake every game. Monroe tied SHAW in two periods, won the third, but only garnered three total points. Monroe ended one point shy of the title game, where SHAW defeated Kenosha, 5-4.

Six teams participated in the tournament, which included Hudson and Middleton. Hudson nearly helped Monroe get into the championship, but blew a lead to SHAW that allowed SHAW to advance.
