MONROE - The Avalanche hosted a Squirt A and B hockey tournament at SLICE Jan. 11-13. The Squirt A tournament included the Avalanche A, Orland Park Vikings AA, West Madison Polar Caps A, and McFarland A. The Squirt B tournament consisted of the Avalanche B, Rockford A, Vikings A, Beloit B, McFarland B, and Kenosha B. To determine the winner, the tournament was scored by adding up the game-by-game points. Two points were given for a win and one point for each period won.
Squirt A
In their first game, the Avalanche defeated the West Madison Polar Caps A, 5-4. The Avalanche came out strong and scored three goals in the first period by Hayden Roth, Tessa Janecke, and Anika Einbeck. Earning assists on those goals were Cade Janecke (two), Luke Kuberski, Haley Knauf, and Hayden Roth.
Tessa Janecke scored for the Avalanche in the second period with the Polar Caps responding with two goals of their own. The third period was a showdown between the two teams. The Polar Caps added another goal and pulled their goalie with 1:30 on the clock. The Polar Caps snuck in a goal with :01 on the clock, but it was too little too late. Goalie Heath Bear recorded 31 saves in the game.
In the second game, the Avalanche shut out McFarland 4-0. Cade Janecke lit the lamp for two goals, with Einbeck and Tessa Janecke each adding one. Roth and Cade Janecke each earned an assist. Bear recorded 16 saves, and the Avalanche had 19 shots on goal.
The championship took place on Sunday against the Vikings AA team. Luke Kuberski scored the first goal at the end of the second period, assisted by Alyssa Knauf. The Avalanche were unable to hold onto the lead as the Vikings scored three in the third period. The Avalanche finished just one point behind the Vikings, earning a second place finish in the tournament. Bear recorded 19 saves.
Squirt B
The Avalanche took on Rockford in the first game. It was a very tight contest, and with the scored tied 3-3 at the end of the game, the teams went to a shootout.
Scoring for the Avalanche were Colton O'Connor, Brady Smith and Ethan Williams. Earning assists were Williams, Alvin Buholzer, Bryce Montgomery, Rob Schroeder and Jayden Johnson. Scoring in the shootout were Buholzer, Williams and Johnson, but Rockford scored with their fourth player, beating the Avalanche 7-6. Goalie Aiden Runkle had 11 saves.
The Avalanche dominated the second game against McFarland B, winning 3-1. The game was tied at the end of the first period with an Avalanche goal scored by Brady Smith on an assist by Ryan Molitor. The Avalanche cinched the game in the third period with two goals by O'Connor and Molitor.
The final game was the third-place game. It was a hard fought battle, but the Avalanche fell to Kenosha 4-2, finishing in fourth place. Scoring were Williams and O'Connor, with assists by Smith and Williams.
