MONROE - Somehow, against all laws of physics, there is fire on the ice at S.L.I.C.E.
The Monroe Avalanche high school club has rattled off four straight victories in the span of a week, the latest a 4-2 win over Oregon's junior-varsity squad Friday at home.
Brandon Mortimer scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 1 minute, 31 seconds left in the third period after helping kickoff the scoring with an assist to Drew Geissbuhler early in the first period.
After a scoreless middle period, Brett Nafzger scored with just less than five minutes to play before Mortimer's tally. Jamie Moats added an unassisted empty-netter with 30 ticks left.
Derek Lewis was solid between the pipes, making saves on 14 of the 16 shots he faced.
Monroe triggered its winning streak by taking three contests in as many days. The Avalanche lived up to their nickname as they covered the Dodgeville Ice Wolves, 9-0, on Friday, Dec. 28.
A 7-3 victory over Stoughton followed on Saturday before the weekend ended in pleasant fashion with a 7-2 rout of Arrowhead.
