MONROE - The Monroe Avalanche boys hockey co-op dropped the puck on the season in dominating fashion, skating to an 8-0 season-opening win over the DeForest co-op Saturday, Dec. 7.
Junior Brett Jones of Darlington scored two goals and senior Matt Hodgson of Monroe had one goal and three assists. Seven different players scored goals for the Avalanche.
"We really anticipated the start of the season," Hodgson said. "We were really pumped up. It was a great way to start the season."
Jones scored the first goal with 6 minutes, 3 seconds left in the first period on an assist from Hodgson. Hodgson scored late in the first period to give the Avalanche a 2-0 lead. The Avalanche outshot DeForest-Lodi-Poynette 61-8.
"I feel like we had a lot of scoring chances," Hodgson said. "We could have put a few more shots on the net.
Senior Jake Trickel of Monroe scored a goal on a pass from Hodgson with 5:11 left in the second period. The Avalanche again got some late heroics at the end of the second period as Jones punched in his second goal on an assist from Trickel with 8 seconds to go to give the Avalanche a 4-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Jones already equaled the amount of goals he scored all last season (two).
"It means a lot for me to score those two goals," Jones said. "I was in the right place at the right time."
The Avalanche exploded for four goals in the third period. Sophomore Anthony Theisen of Beloit Turner scored a goal on an assist from Gus Werhane early in the third period. Werhane then added a goal to give the Avalanche a 6-0 lead.
Freshman Tyler Johnson of Monroe scored a goal on assists by Trickel and Hodgson with 2:20 to go in the third period. Sophomore Jared Kleckner of Freeport capped the scoring with a goal at 2:11.
"It was a complete team win," Monroe coach Nathan Brown said. "The seniors led the freshmen and underclassmen. They worked together as a team. That is exactly what they needed to do. So many of our goals were a direct result of our defensemen."
Senior goalie Ethan Studer of Monroe had eight saves.
"He's an intelligent and strong goalie," Brown said. "It gives everyone on the team confidence when he is that strong in the net."
Monroe will face a test hosting McFarland Tuesday, Dec. 10 and Madison Edgewood Friday, Dec. 13. Edgewood (2-0) is ranked No. 8 in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey poll.
"Every game is a test," Brown said. "They will skate through every practice and whistle and go as hard as they can. We know more competition is coming. That is why these guys want to be out there practicing so hard."
