The Monroe Avalanche Mite team on March 5-6 traveled to Beloit for the 2011 Beloit Mite Invitational and took second place.
Each team played four games over the weekend and Monroe finished 3-1. Each member of the team received a trophy.
Teams participating in the tournament were Monroe Avalanche, Beloit Blades, Stoughton Vikings, Barrington Redwings, and Winnetka Hockey Club. (Mite teams are boys and girls ages eight and under.)

The Avalanche opened the scoring in the first period with Alyssa Knauf scoring the first goal, assisted by Bryce Montgomery. The Redwings responded in the second period with a goal, followed by two goals by Tessa Janecke of the Avalanche team, with one assist by Alyssa Knauf.
Goalie Heath Bear and the strong Avalanche defensive line kept the Redwings from scoring ending the game with an Avalanche 3-1 win.
The second game was a heartbreaker for the Avalanche, losing to the Winnetka Hockey Club (the Invitational champs). Bear recorded 38 saves.
On Sunday, the Avalanche's third and fourth games were held back-to-back. The Avalanche took on the Beloit Blades, dominating the entire game and winning 6-0. Bear earned the shut-out and recorded eight saves. The Avalanche strong defensive line - consisting of Haley Knauf, Luke Kuberski, Kaiden Klitzke, and Broc Kuberski - played aggressively to keep the puck away from the goal and inside the zone. Cade Janecke and Tessa Janecke each earned a hat trick (three goals in one game) for the Avalanche. Alyssa Knauf recorded one assist.
Immediately following this game, the Avalanche knocked off the Stoughton Vikings 3-0 in a hard fought battle for second place.
Cade Janecke of the Avalanche opened the scoring in the first period. The score remained 1-0 through the third period. Cade Janecke scored a goal in the third period, followed by another goal by Tessa Janecke, assisted by Cade.
Bear earned his second shutout for the tournament. Once again, the strong defensive Avalanche line consisting of Haley Knauf, Luke Kuberski, Kaiden Klitzke, and Broc Kuberski played aggressively to keep the puck away from the goal and inside the zone. The offensive line consisting of Cade Janecke, Tessa Janecke, Bryce Montgomery, Brady Smith, Josh Haight, and Jayden Johnson worked very well together, making smart passes and plays.
