MONROE - A short-handed Monroe Avalanche team lost a Badger South Conference showdown to Stoughton 6-1.

Monroe coach Nate Brown said the Avalanche played short-handed due to illness and injuries.

Monroe senior Matt Hodgson scored the Avalanche's lone goal at 4 minutes, 27 seconds into the second period on an assist by senior Jake Trickel. The Vikings led 2-0 after the first period and then scored three goals in the second period to take a 5-1 lead. Stoughton had a team with 27 players and the Avalanche had just nine players.

"They played their hearts out," Brown said. "No matter how good of a skater you are you will be spent by the third period. They played a phenomenal game. Our guys went all-out the entire game."

Avalanche goalie Ethan Studer had a game-high 49 saves. The Vikings outshot the Avalanche 55-17. With the loss, the Avalanche drop to 5-8, 0-8 Badger South.

"It was a very physical game," Brown said. "Stoughton came into it thinking they would pad their stats. You could see they were frustrated."

Monroe will play at Beloit Memorial today.
