MONROE - Senior Jamie Armstrong signed her national letter of intent Wednesday in the Monroe High School gymnasium to play volleyball at George Washington University in the nation's capitol next season.

"It was a completely amazing feeling," she said. "There's a lot of weight off of my shoulders now because it's official. I can't stop smiling."

After playing four stellar years of volleyball for both Monroe as well as AAU teams, Armstrong is ready to join Jojit Coronel's Colonials.

"(Club ball) is a completely different standard of volleyball. It's a lot more intense and competitive. Every girl has a goal to play in college," she said.

Armstrong has earned all-conference honors throughout her career playing for the Cheesemakers, leading Monroe to the regional final this past season. She also has been a staple in Monroe's basketball frontcourt, leading the Cheesemakers to state games twice in three seasons, including a championship in 2008 and runner-up in 2009.

"I couldn't have gotten as far as I have without my friends and family. I love them to death. My friends kept me in the loop of things when I was away at tournaments every weekend. They were always by my side," she said.

Armstrong said she loved the atmosphere of the Washington, which was a big reason why she chose to play there.

"I visited there a total of four times. I just really love the city. You have the college campus feel and then you are just a few blocks out from the heart of D.C. You can see the White House and all of these memorials and it's so amazing. There is such a diverse group of people there," she said. "I went there just this past weekend and I wanted to stay. I completely connected with the team. I just get all excited talking about it."
