FORT ATKINSON - Monroe senior Becca Armstrong out-dueled Fort Atkinson's all-state pitcher Kaitlyn Hollman to lead the Cheesemakers to a 4-2 win over three-time defending Badger South Conference champion Blackhawks.
Armstrong pitched a complete game and gave up two runs. She struck out 15 and didn't issue a walk.
"(Armstrong) out-pitched Hollman who was third team all-state last year," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "Becca has been on an amazing run. She was very good against the three-time defending conference champions."
Monroe (15-2, 7-0 Badger South) has a two game lead on Fort Atkinson and a three game lead on Milton halfway through the conference season.
"It was nice to get a win on the road against the three-time conference champions, but we haven't accomplished anything yet," Buvid said. "We certainly put ourselves in a good position. We still have a lot of work to do. We have to take care of business."
Monroe junior Kayla Updike went 3-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Cheesemakers. Lauren Hendrickson went 2-for-3 and junior Taylor O'Leksy was 2-for-4.
Monroe junior Ellie Grossen had a key two-out, two-run single in the fourth.
Monroe will play at Madison Edgewood today and then plays a big doubleheader at Milton Friday, May 10. The Cheesemakers will host Fort Atkinson in a rescheduled game Monday, May 13.
The Cheesemakers had eight hits against Fort Atkinson, but Buvid still sees room for improvement.
"We are still not hitting on all cylinders offensively," he said.
