BLANCHARDVILLE - A stifling defensive pressure by visiting Argyle was able to force 31 turnovers by the host Pecatonica girls basketball team en route to a 63-21 victory for Kurt Ritschard and his Orioles team.
"We ran our press very well tonight," Ritschard said. "We wanted to go out and prove that we are a good team. Our girls did a good job in applying the pressure and putting them (Pecatonica) in a position to make some mistakes."
Argyle, who had everyone score at least once, received solid performances from Jessica Treuthardt and Jenna Langmeier, scoring 18 and 10 points, respectively.
For Pecatonica coach Scott Carlson and his team, Thursday night's loss was a matter of not being able to convert open opportunities into points.
"We got some pretty good looks throughout much of the first half," he said. "But we just weren't able to connect on much of our shots, which got us behind."
Pecatonica, who is still in search of their first win of the year, will travel to Albany on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Monticello 45, Juda 24
MONTICELLO - Lori Brokopp and her Monticello girls basketball team started off their Thursday night conference game against visiting Juda with a statement as they held the Panthers scoreless in the first quarter.
The Ponies ended the first quarter with an 18-point lead, and went on to win 45-24 in a game that featured solid efforts by the Ponies on both sides of the ball.
"We started the game with a halfcourt pressure, and came out strong defensively," Brokopp said. "We were able to put the pressure on them (Juda), force some turnovers, and convert into our transition offense, which gave us some early opportunities."
Alyssah Kubly had 18 points for the Ponies, who also had contributions from Jordan Garrison and Samantha DeVoe with seven points each.
Molly Marass had nine points for the Panthers (4-8, 1-4) who host Cassville this Saturday, Jan. 18.
