Argyle tops Darlington; Black Hawk goes down

GRATIOT - Just five days after playing for a Division 4 state basketball championship, Black Hawk began its girls softball season Thursday with an 8-0 loss to the Potosi Chieftains in non-conference action.

Potosi senior Reba Keene, one of the top pitchers in the Six Rivers West, went the distance and struck out 11 to lead the Chieftains.

Kayla Melland started for Black Hawk, giving up eight runs on seven hits. She walked 10 and struck out six.

The Warriors travel to Wisconsin Heights for a non-conference game Tuesday.

Argyle 9, Darlington 5

ARGYLE - The Argyle Orioles opened their season with a 9-5 non-conference win over the Darlington Redbirds Thursday.

The Orioles scored eight of their nine runs in the first three innings. Senior Jackie Dammen went 1-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs for the Orioles.

Kayla Ostby starred in the pitching circle and at the plate for Argyle. Ostby pitched a complete game, giving up five runs on six hits while walking eight and striking out six. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Trailing 7-2, Darlington came up with three runs in the top of the third to make it 7-5, but couldn't get any closer.

Laura Steiner started for the Redbirds, giving up nine runs on seven hits. The Redbirds were victimized by nine walks and four errors.

Argyle (1-0) will host Shullsburg-Benton in non-conference action Tuesday. Darlington (0-2) will host Cuba City in their SWAL Conference opener Tuesday.

Parkview 21,

New Glarus 2

ORFORDVILLE - A 12-run second inning sent the Glarner Knights to a non-conference loss in their season opener against Orfordville Parkview Thursday.

The Vikings added on eight runs in the third and a single run in the fourth to account for all of their scoring, in a game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Glarner Knights were only able to get two hits off Orfordville Parkview's Jody Sorgatz. Calsea Garbe started for New Glarus and struck out five over four innings.

New Glarus (0-1) will travel to Lodi for another non-conference game Thursday.
