Argyle tops Albany on error in seventh

ARGYLE - Playing without three-year starting shortstop, senior Matt Cash, the Argyle baseball team found itself in a bit of a bind Friday.

Cash broke his nose and cheekbone after taking a pitch in the face earlier this week, and is lost for the season.

"We have five starters that are either freshmen or sophomores - plus our entire bench," Argyle coach Travis Erickson said.

Despite the youth movement, the Orioles followed the lead of Nick Martin on the mound and eeked out a 3-2 win over Albany in a game that was originally scheduled for April 30.

Martin struck out seven Comets, while allowing just five hits, and didn't walk a single hitter. His defense committed only one error, and that came without consequences.

Albany scored two runs in the fourth and Argyle scored a run in each the fourth and the sixth innings.

"It was a pitchers' duel," Erickson said. Albany's Bryce Hulbert allowed just two hits in the game, walked seven and struck out 12.

In the bottom of the seventh, freshman 9-hitter Jarod Johnson led off with a bunt single that went over a charging defender's head. Andy Bohlman walked and Erickson called for a sacrifice bunt. On the play, an Albany defender threw the ball over the first baseman's head, and Johnson scored easily to get the win.

Johnson's bunt single and an infield single by Kevin Berg accounted for Argyle's hits.

Lodi 7, New Glarus 5

NEW GLARUS - Lodi's 4-run second inning put the Knights on their heels and New Glarus couldn't recover Friday.

Nick Stuessy threw for the Knights, giving up seven walks and five hits, while striking out three. The most glaring factor was New Glarus' struggles on defense, as the Knights had five errors.

Offensively, New Glarus had nine hits and scored a run in the first, third and seventh innings, as well as a two-spot in the fifth.

Matt Felt had three hits, including two doubles and a pair of runs. Stuessy had two hits, a double, and three RBI. Kirbe French, Carlin Moen and Braden Pittman all started and had hits.
