Argyle stuns Barneveld in 5

ARGYLE - The serving of Argyle junior Katrina Carter and Ashley Bruehlman propelled the Orioles to a thrilling five set win over Six Rivers East Conference rival Barneveld 17-25, 25-22, 25-18, 17-25, 15-6.

With the win, Argyle improves to 5-2, 3-0 Six Rivers East. Is Argyle a contender for the conference championship?

"I know we are fighting for it," Argyle first-year coach Jen Butler said. "They pushed hard and have been working hard. They definitely deserved this."

After dropping the first set, the Orioles didn't make any major adjustments.

"Once they settled down it was just better execution and making plays," Butler said.

Barneveld entered the season as one of the favorites along with Monticello to win the conference. Carter had five straight points and two aces to help lift the Orioles to a 15-7 lead in the third set.

"She did a really good job of serving," Butler said of Carter. "That really helped a lot."

Bruehlman had two of her three aces in the decisive fifth game. Argyle senior Jenna Langmeier had six of her team-high 14 kills in the fifth set. Langmeier also racked up 34 digs.

"She (Langmeier) really picked it up for us," Butler said. "The defense really stepped it up."

Argyle sophomore Kayla Butler-Paulson had a team-high 31 assists. The Orioles had a quartet of players with three aces including Carter, Bruehlman, Paulson and Langmeier.



Monticello 3, Juda 0

JUDA - Monticello senior Alyssah Kubly delivered 13 kills and five aces to lead the Ponies to a sweep of Juda 26-24, 25-15, 25-14.

Juda (3-3, 0-3 Six Rivers East) trailed 10-5 early in the first set before battling back. The Panthers took a 24-23 lead and were serving with the game point on the line. The Ponies pulled out the first game en route to the win.

"We have to keep fighting these battles and get over these humps," Juda coach Scott Anderson said. "The last two scores are not indicative of how we played. We kept the ball in play. I'm proud of my team. We made Monticello really work."

Juda senior Katlyn Steinmann had a team-high five kills. Senior teammate Morgan Adkins had four kills, 14 digs and three aces. Junior Megan Powers had nine assists and sophomore Alexis Goecks added eight digs.

Monticello senior Paige Dilley came through with five kills. Senior teammate Jordan Garrison had a match-high 19 assists.



Black Hawk 3, Pecatonica 0

BLANCHARDVILLE - Black Hawk jumped on Pecatonica early on and cruised to a sweep of the Vikings 25-16, 25-13, 25-15.

With the loss, Pecatonica drops to 0-3, 0-2 Six Rivers East.

Pecatonica coach Tori Leonard understands the slow starts are tough to overcome.

"We fell behind early and never really caught up," Leonard said. "As our usual, it comes down to our fundamentals of serve receive."

Black Hawk junior Aleigha Sigafus had a team-high eight kills. Senior teammate Alexis Warrell racked up 17 assists and sophomore Sam Lovelace added five aces. Brodie Abney and Elizabeth Holland each had one block for the Warriors.

Pecatonica junior Britt Miller delivered two kills and had a team-high four blocks as well as four digs. Senior Brooke Johnson had three blocks and two aces. Sophomore Elizabeth Tisch led the Vikings with six assists.



Brodhead 3, Palmyra-Eagle 0

PALMYRA - Brodhead opened the Rock Valley South volleyball season with a sweep of Palmyra-Eagle 25-20, 25-11, 25-9.

Brodhead junior Amber Pickel had a team-high eight kills and senior Brooke Boegli had three aces.



Iowa-Grant 3, Darlington 0

LIVINGSTON - After dropping a tight first set, Darlington couldn't recover and Iowa-Grant swept the Redbirds 25-20, 25-16, 25-12.

Darlington's Mariah Wiegel had two kills and five digs to lead the Redbirds. Darlington freshman Kennedy Rankin and Allie Kissel each added two kills. Teammate Chloe Hinderman added four assists.
