Argyle, Monticello lose in second round

HAZEL GREEN - Breakdowns in serve receive were too much to overcome in the Argyle volleyball team's bid to upset No. 1 seed Southwestern.

Southwestern swept the Orioles in three sets 25-19, 25-13, 25-13 in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal.

"We really got beat up on the serve receive," Argyle coach Shane Johnson said. "We struggled on serve receive and started to go into panic mode."

Argyle junior Frida Cuevas had eight digs and junior Micala Peterson had three kills. Argyle sophomore Kayla Ostby had a team-high seven assists and two aces.

Johnson said Southwestern was too good to give extra chances and free balls because they would hit them back.

Catholic Central 3, Monticello 0

BURLINGTON - Catholic Central swept Monticello in three sets 25-17, 25-13, 25-13 to set up a regional championship match with Black Hawk.

Monticello senior Taylor Pfeuti had five kills and five blocks to lead the Ponies. Monticello junior C.J. Diller had 15 assists and two aces and junior Desiree Marty added two aces.

Catholic Central has won three of the last four Division 4 state championships.
