ARGYLE - The Argyle girls basketball team rode its post players to a 76-46 win over Pecatonica Thursday, Feb. 20.
Argyle led just 13-10 after the first quarter. The Orioles outscored the Vikings 21-11 in the second quarter and rolled from there.
"We settled for jump shots in the first quarter," Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard said. "We moved the ball better offensively in the second quarter. We decided to pound the ball inside. I just thought our mindset changed."
Argyle senior Jessica Treuthardt scored a game-high 22 points. Treuthardt and Hannah Saalsaa scored 15 of the Orioles' 21 points in the second quarter in the post.
Argyle (10-9, 7-5 Six Rivers East) scored 21 points in each of the last three quarters. The Orioles increased their pressure defense on the press and the Vikings struggled with turnovers.
"They really upped their pressure and we had some turnovers," Pecatonica coach Scott Carlson said. "We have continued to get better this season."
Argyle junior Jozey Thoman scored 13 points and Kayla Butler-Paulson had 12 points.
Pecatonica's Emily Scoville scored a team-high 18 points to lead the Vikings. Both teams shot solid from the free throw line. The Orioles shot 80 percent (16 of 20) and the Vikings shot 73.9 percent (17 of 23).
Carlson wanted to see the Vikings (1-20, 1-11) play better defense in the post against the Orioles.
"We really just didn't do a good job of controlling her," he said of Treuthardt.
Barneveld 67, Albany 16
BARNEVELD - The No. 1 ranked Barneveld Eagles steamrolled Albany 67-16.
Barneveld (20-0) raced out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter and led by 35 points at the half.
Barneveld's Hannah Whitish scored a game-high 21 points and the Eagles made eight 3-pointers.
Albany's Sydnee Woyak scored a team-high five points. With the loss, Albany drops to 2-19, 2-10.
Cambridge 65,
New Glarus 57
CAMBRIDGE - In an unusual scheduling quirk, in the first of two games in three days against Cambridge, New Glarus had too many second half breakdowns and lost 65-57 Thursday.
New Glarus 8-11, 4-5 Capitol South) trailed just 21-19 at the half. The Blue Jays were able to take control of the game building a 12-point lead in the third quarter.
"We relaxed a little bit," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "They were able to get it inside to their post players."
Cambridge's Monica Muth scored a game-high 25 points.
New Glarus sophomore Vanessa Narveson scored a team-high 21 points. Senior Courtney Feller had 12 points and senior Sierra Watrud added 11 points. Watrud made three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to rally the Knights, but it wasn't enough.
"She (Watrud) really picked it up in the fourth quarter for us," Scheele said. "We have to be attacking the basket all the time and we can't be hesitant."
New Glarus will host Cambridge in a makeup game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22.
Monticello 57,
Juda 23
JUDA - Monticello had a balanced scoring attack with three players in double figures as the Ponies rolled to a 57-23 win over Juda.
Monticello junior Alyssah Kubly scored a game-high 15 points, junior Courtney Leuzinger scored 12 points and junior Samantha DeVoe had 10 points to lead the Ponies.
Monticello (12-8, 7-5 Six Rivers East) raced out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter. The Ponies were able to build the lead to 21 points by the half. With the loss, Juda drops to 6-14, 3-9.
Juda's Molly Marass scored a team-high 10 points and made two 3-pointers.
