NEW GLARUS - New Glarus coach Megan Scheele couldn't help but look at her team's scoreless second quarter, after the Glarner Knights came up just short against Argyle, 44-41.
New Glarus started off well, winning the first quarter 12-9. However, Argyle's 1-2-2 zone started causing problems for the Knights in the second.
"That 1-2-2 we hardly ever see." Scheele said. "We got a lot of looks. We just couldn't hit them."
The Orioles outscored the Knights 6-0 in the second and 18-13 in the third.
The fourth went to New Glarus, as the Knights came back to tie it up at 41. However, after a missed shot and a few Oriole free throws, the comeback proved just short.
Sierra Watrud led the Knights with 15 points, while Kayla Ostby was Argyle's top scorer with 13.
Despite the valiant comeback attempt, Scheele admitted the zero in the box score is hard to look at, especially after knowing her team lost by just three points.
"It's tough not scoring in that quarter at all," she said. "We don't know what the second half would've been if we had scored."
The Knights (8-6, 4-1 Capitol South) will now start their second run through the conference schedule, beginning with Waterloo at home Thursday. In their first meeting, the Knights won 49-20.
Benton-Shulls. 51, Juda 32
BENTON - A big second quarter proved to be the difference as the Juda girls basketball team fell to Benton-Shullsburg in a Six Rivers crossover.
After finishing the first quarter down 4-3, the Zephyrs outscored the Panthers 22-4 in the second.
"They had three 3s there, and that was just good patience on their part against our zone," Juda coach Curt Brown said. "Offensively they were more patient on the open look."
After Benton-Shullsburg took the third quarter, the Panthers got some offensive momentum going in the fourth.
Brown said junior Jessie Jordan got into foul trouble in the third quarter and when he put her back out in fourth the offense played better.
Leading the way for the Panthers offensively was senior Jessica Rackow, who scored 10 points. Fellow seniors Brittany Moe and McKayla Trotter added eight and six points, respectively.
"Jessie Rackow had a nice night getting to the basket," Brown said.
He said the team resorted to driving more and trying to get penetration when the outside shots weren't falling.
"We can shoot ... it's just a matter if we are clicking," Brown said. "It just wasn't enough after that second quarter when they really took over."
The Panthers will travel to take on Black Hawk Thursday.
