ALBANY - The Albany boys basketball team broke their game with Johnson Creek open in the third quarter, as they cruised to a 61-30 victory.

Albany led by 12 at halftime, but a quick basket by Johnson Creek led Albany coach Derik Doescher to call a timeout to address his team.

"They scored two right out of the locker room," Doescher said. "I took a timeout 30 seconds in and let 'em have it pretty good, and the kids responded. They picked the intensity up and kinda took it from there."

Isaiah Shell, the leading scorer in the Six Rivers East conference, led the Comets with 21 points. Mitchell Kauk contributed 14 points, and freshman Tyler Dahl added 12.

"Kauk probably had the best game of his career," Doescher said. "Tyler Dahl had 12 points, that was nice to see."

Doescher said that this was the best he's seen his team play this year.

"We played well," he said. "We played probably our best game of the year. Offensively, we did a lot of nice things. We jumped out on 'em early. We played well as a team."

Albany (3-7, 0-4) will look to pick up their first conference win of the season on Tuesday at Argyle.

Argyle 47, Highland 37

HIGHLAND - A big fourth quarter propelled the Argyle boys basketball team to a 47-37 non-conference win over Highland.

Argyle held just a one-point lead entering the final quarter, but the Orioles outscored Highland 19-10 in the fourth to secure the victory.

"It was close early in the fourth," said Argyle coach Michael Cassidy. "We went on a nice little run, but they responded right back. We had an 8-0 run and they answered back with a 6-0 run. After that, we relaxed a little. We had some clutch hoops from some of our young guys. We're not a team that usually scores 19 points in a quarter."

Christopher Severson led Argyle with 17 points. Freshman Riley Ostby also scored in double digits, racking up 11 points. After the game, Cassidy praised the play of Ostby and fellow freshman Kyle Emberson.

"Emberson hit two huge threes. Emberson and Ostby really played well," he said.

Argyle evened their record at 5-5 with the win. Cassidy said he was happy with his team's effort.

"We played hard. I think that was important because in our last effort, which was before Christmas, we got outworked and outplayed. If we play hard, we play well. It may not always translate to wins, but we play well."

Big Foot 61, Brodhead 49

BIG FOOT - The Brodhead boys basketball team came up short against Big Foot Friday night, losing 61-49.

Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said his team's effort was solid, they just weren't quite able to make enough plays to pull out the win.

"As usual, our effort's always been there. Losing's a little bit easier when your kids are playing hard," he said. "We had some foul trouble. We needed some other guys to step up and I didn't really see that. We were down 16, but we got it down to four late in the game. Big Foot was shooting free throws and a ball goes off our hands and they got a putback. Another free throw goes off our hands again, where we would have had a chance to go down and get a basket. Little things like that we need to do a better job of."

Ned Slocum led the Cardinals with 17 points. Josiah DeLorme was Brodhead's next leading scorer with 13.

"We thought that their best player would be guarding Ned, but that it was a quickness mismatch. He was able to attack the basket and get to the line," Kammerer said.

Brodhead fell to 4-7 with the loss. The Cardinals travel to Monticello on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup with the Ponies.

Belmont 62, Juda 40

BELMONT - With a short-handed lineup, the Juda boys basketball team struggled to make shots, and fell to Belmont, 62-40.

"I don't think we shot it very well tonight. We got some decent looks, but we didn't put the ball in the basket," said Juda coach Mike Armitage. "Tonight we had 10 kids eligible to play. Some got some minutes in a varsity game that usually don't get minutes."

The Panthers fell to 3-6 with the loss. Juda hosts Pecatonica in a Six Rivers East matchup on Tuesday.

"We have to focus on having a little better ball control on offense and defending better than we did," Armitage said.
