Argyle advances

ARGYLE - Freshman Gavin Johnson went 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored to lead the Argyle baseball team to a 12-3 win over Belmont in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal game on Thursday.

Johnson led a 14-hit attack by the Orioles.

Argyle scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-1 lead, and then broke the game open with a five-run third .

Argyle's Travis Dammen went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and sophomore Mitch Flannery was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior Cam Treuthardt went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Third-seeded Argyle advances to play at second-seeded Barneveld in a regional semifinal game Tuesday.

Flannery pitched four innings to get the win. He gave up one earned run on four hits, struck out three and walked four. Treuthardt tossed three shutout innings in relief and struck out six.



New Glarus 5, Parkview 1

ORFORDVILLE - New Glarus pitcher Jared Carney tossed a three-hitter to lead the fifth-seeded Glarner Knights to an upset of fourth-seeded Parkview in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal game.

Carney gave up one earned run on three hits. He struck out six and walked two.

Parkview was plagued by four errors.

"It was a great win for the program and kids," New Glarus coach Chris Rear said. "I'm proud of the kids. The work ethic and the pride they take in building this program, the ability to learn the game and their attitude won the game tonight."

The Glarner Knights had five players each collect one hit. New Glarus junior Andrew Nimtz had two RBI.

New Glarus (7-11) advances to play at top-seeded Darlington in a regional semifinal game Tuesday.

"We are looking forward to playing against a quality opponent and a successful program," he said. "They (Darlington) are not going to beat themselves and they will put a lot of pressure on us. It will be a challenge, but I look forward to competing against a school that has had our number in many sports the last couple of years."



In other regional quarterfinal games, Faith Christian defeated Monticello 4-0 in Division 4, and Southwestern rolled over Black Hawk 14-4 in five innings.
