JOHNSON CREEK - Albany coach Derik Doescher is never surprised to see Isaiah Shell drop 20 points on an opponent, but the ninth-year Comets coach was a bit taken aback by the sophomore's effort against Johnson Creek on Tuesday night.

Shell scored all 20 of his points in the fourth quarter, when Albany dominated in closing out a 60-45 non-conference victory.

"I can't say we have," Doescher said of a player scoring 20 in a quarter. "He's averaging right around 20, 21 points for the year. In my nine years, I've never had a kid score 20 in a quarter."

Shell sat out the entire second quarter after picking up two early fouls, then went scoreless in the third.

"He comes back in the third and I'm thinking, he's got fresh legs, he's not in foul trouble anymore, he's ready to go, but he really didn't do anything," Doescher said. "In the fourth quarter he got hot, which was good for us."

Senior Ty Mauerman also had a big quarter, his coming in the first. He scored 13 of his 15 points in the opening eight minutes as the Comets rolled to a 19-10 lead.

Senior Gavin Ruef had 16 points for Albany (5-3), which topped its victory total in a four-win season a year ago.

Kenny Rank scored 14 points for Johnson Creek, which pulled within 38-32 entering the fourth quarter.

"We did what we needed to do in the fourth and got into our transition game and got back to doing things we do well," Doescher said.

MONTICELLO 48, BELMONT 45

BELMONT - Monticello senior Lukas Kolasch scored six points in the final minute and the Ponies needed them to keep Belmont winless in a Six Rivers Conference crossover game.

Trailing 45-39 with 1 minute, 15 seconds remaining, Kolasch started Monticello's late rally with a basket with 41.6 seconds left, and junior Bryce Klitzke hit two free throws with 30.9 left.

Kolasch then added two free throws with 21.9 seconds left, and two more with 4.6 remaining to account for the final margin.

Kolasch went 10-for-10 from the foul line and finished with 20 points while Klitzke added 12.

The Ponies (4-5) were 14 of 16 from the line in the game.

Freshman Lane Friedrich and junior Jeremy Richardson scored 10 points apiece for Belmont (0-10).
