BELLEVILLE - Albany's Bailey Hlavachek didn't want to make any predictions about what may be in store for her in the 800-meter run after she set a new record at the 17th annual Raider Invitational on Friday.
"That last stretch got me," Hlavachek said after she finished first in 2 minutes, 21.9 seconds) - about nine seconds ahead of Pecatonica-Argyle senior Kendra Sigg (2:30.5). "At first I didn't know and when the ref told me and then I looked at my watch. I wanted to run a 2:20 and definitely break the record."
Hlavachek, who finished sixth at the Division 3 state meet in the 1,600 last year, didn't want to say the 800 might be her stronger race this year.
"I think I'm getting stronger in the 800," she said. "There is still time to tell. The mile is still my favorite."
Sugar River outdistanced Lodi 133-122.5 to win the team championship. There were six meet records set and the Raiders had a hand in two of them.
Sugar River's Emily Diaz won the 100 hurdles (15.9) and anchored the winning 800 relay team that set a meet record. Diaz teamed with Madeline Brunner, Emily DeNure and Victoria Ortgiesen to take first in 1 minute, 50.8 seconds.
"I think it means a lot to our team," Diaz said of winning the invite. "It definitely shows how good we have been doing. It's always good to get a win at home."
The same quartet that won the 800 relay also won the 1,600 relay in a record 4:14.15, which was about 11 seconds ahead of Columbus. Brunner added a first place in the long jump (15-11 1/4) and Monticello's Becky Nelson was third (15-4).
Black Hawk sophomore Jen Wellnitz won both the 100 (12.6) and 200 (26.3), and set records in both races. Pecatonica-Argyle's Katie Zwicker took second in the 100 (13.4). Black Hawk's Olivia Holland took second in the 300 hurdles (48.8).
The Warriors swept the top two spots in the discus. Kate Quinn won with a heave of 96-9 and Brittany Klemm was second (95-11).
Pecatonica-Argyle's 400 relay team of Brittany Ziller, Hannah Swenson, Abby Flanagan and Katie Zwicker won with a season-best time of 54.3, just ahead of Sugar River (54.4). Pecatonica-Argyle's Cassidy Stiner won the shot put (30-10). The Vikings also added a third place finishes in the 800 (1:56.1) and 1,600 (4:27.3) relays.
"I think they have been trying to cut their time down," Pecatonica-Argyle coach Cathy Francois said. "It's their goal to get their handoffs down. They have been improving. Their goal is to drop time for conference and the regional and see how far they can go."
The Raiders also received several other strong performances. Brunner finished second in the 3,200 (12:17) and Ortgiesen was third in the 300 hurdles (49.4). Lou Ann Judd took third in the 1,600 (5:42.8). Harley Hollis finished second in the triple jump (32-0) and teammate Samantha Stecha was third (31-11 3/4). The Raiders' 3,200 relay team of DeNure, Judd, Amanda Kaiser and Katie Schmitz took second (10:38.4).
Sugar River coach Dan Schettler said the girls have battled some injuries and they haven't been able to get the right combination in some relays together due to injuries.
"We like to think we have a good shot of getting to state in that relay," he said of the 800. "The time has to keep dropping."
Sugar River's Alexis Hanson has worked her way back after battling a quad injury at the Glendenning Green/Lafayette County Invitational earlier this year. "If her leg continues to improve we will consider her as well," Schettler said of the 800 relay. "We will have to see how that quad progresses the next 10 days."
