ALBANY - Hayli Peach picked up where she left off in hoops and Tara Walz danced her way out of trouble as Albany picked up a 9-2 victory over Cassville in a non-conference softball game between two Comets clubs Saturday.
After walks filled the bases in the first, the freshman catcher Peach legged out a bunt single that brought home the first of three runs in the inning. In the sixth inning, Megan Schulz put a charge into a 2-run triple to cap a four-run rally that began at the bottom of the Comets' order. Schulz, a senior, scored three times.
While Walz made her coach, Connie Wunschel, scratch her head by striking out twice trying to bunt, the senior struck out four batters and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning.
"She's come a long way; last year she may have folded," Wunschel said.
The Comets travel to Delavan to face Faith Christian Tuesday. Last Thursday's game at Argyle was suspended with Albany down 5-3 and one out in the top of the fourth inning. Rain caused the game to be carried over with the bases loaded with Schulz at bat. She'll retake her stance April 24 at home when the clubs finish the first game before playing the second in its entirety.
