Albany stays alive while NG, BH, Darlington fall

ALBANY - The Albany baseball team is heating up at the right time.

Cody Schulz went 3 for 4 and he pitched 2 1/3 innings to lead the Comets to a 14-3 five inning win over Faith Christian in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal Friday.

"We have won seven of our last eight games," Albany coach Brian Dahl said. "Hitting wise he (Schulz) had a great game. He struggled pitching. He came through and got the outs when he needed to. Overall, it was a good win."

Schulz picked up the win on the mound. He gave up one run on two hits. Schulz struck out four and walked four.

With the win, Albany (8-11) advances to the regional semifinals to play at No. 2 seed Monticello at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Comets broke the game open with a seven-run second. Albany's Ethan Pfeuti was 2 for 4 at the plate and the Comets had four extra base hits.

Albany senior Boomer Detra pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and he gave up two runs on one hit. He struck out five and walked three.

Belleville 9, New Glarus 3

BELLEVILLE - The New Glarus baseball team couldn't hang on to a late lead in this WIAA Division 3 regional rivalry game.

The Glarner Knights scored two runs in the sixth inning and led 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth where the Wildcats exploded for seven runs.

Belleville out-hit New Glarus 8-4. Knights seniors Carlin Moen, Brandon Gerber and Braden Pittman each hit doubles. Belleville's T.J. Youngs was 2 for 3 to lead the Wildcats at the plate.

Cuba City 8, Darlington 7

CUBA CITY - Cuba City sophomore Brandon Slaats' RBI triple proved to be the difference as the Redbirds lost a heartbreaker in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal.

Darlington scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth to jump out to a 7-0 lead.

The Cubans comeback started with a five-run fourth. The Cubans then capped the rally with a three-run fifth. Darlington's Tyler Hardyman went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double for the Redbirds. Nick Chiaverotti went 2 for 3 and Joey Meylor was 2 for 4 for the Redbirds.

Darlington senior Wade Black pitched 4 1/3 innings and was roughed up for six earned runs on 10 hits.

In other first round regional action, Black Hawk lost to Williams Bay 5-3.
