ALBANY - The Cassville girls basketball team played a 1-2-2 zone defense and packed into the lane in an effort to stop Albany sophomore point guard Payton Zurfluh.

There was an adjustment period, but Zurfluh scored a game-high 21 points, and junior Haley Freitag added 20 points to propel Albany to a 57-45 win on Monday.

"They played a 1-2-2 matchup zone," Albany coach Adam Wamsley said. "They really wanted to take our point guard, Payton Zurfluh, away."

Albany (3-18, 1-8 Six Rivers East) led by just three points at the half. Albany outscored Cassville 36-27 in the second half.

Albany sophomore Megan Anderson and Freitag each hit two 3-pointers.

"The big thing to get them out of that zone is we had to hit some shots," Wamsley said. "Zurfluh, Freitag and Anderson hit some big 3-pointers in the second half."

Albany shot 80 percent from the free-throw line (16 of 20).

"In order to put a game like that away you have to make some free throws and we did that," Wamsley said.

Darlington 60, Lancaster 44

DARLINGTON - Senior Taryn Rankin scored 18 points to lead Darlington to a nonconference win over Lancaster.

Darlington (14-7) had a five-point lead over the Flying Arrows in the first half. The Redbirds outscored the Flying Arrows 28-17 in the second half.

Darlington senior Callie Norton scored 15 points and junior Kennedy Rankin added nine points. Sophomore Kathleen Mathias chipped in eight points.
