Albany runs to the top at Platteville Invite

PLATTEVILLE - It was a banner day for the Albany girls track team Thursday at the Platteville Invite at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Albany senior Devan Brugger led the Comets by winning the 55-meter hurdles (9.90 seconds), taking fourth in the long jump (13-feet-5-inches) and placing seventh in the 200 (:30.67).

Albany's Jordan Mauerman also turned in an impressive meet by taking second place in the triple jump (28-4 1/4), third place in the long jump (13-8) and finishing eighth in the 400.

Pecatonica senior Elise Sigg won the 1,600 with a time of 5 minutes, 40.87 seconds, which was about 12 seconds ahead of Monticello sophomore Kelsey Bernet (5:52.94). Sigg also finished third and won the 800 (2:36.40). Albany senior Nicolette Blumer took fourth (6:07.12).

Sugar River's Rachel Nelson took first place in the 400 with a time of 1:06.77. Pecatonica freshman Kendra Sigg finished sixth in the 400 (1:09.83) and fifth in the 800.

In the other long distance event, Jessica Mauerman finished fourth in the 3,200 (14:01.36).

Pecatonica junior Holly Vlasak took third in the 55 (:8.13). The Vikings had a strong start in the relays, winning the 800 (1:59.10) and 1,600 (4:39.38) events.

Sugar River added a third-place finish in the 3,200 relay and Albany was fourth.

In the boys competition, Albany senior Jake Lincicum finished second in the 1,600. In one of the closest races of the day, Lincicum was edged out for first by hundredths of a second as Tri-State's Joshua Mira captured the title. Lincicum added a third-place finish in the triple jump (38-9 3/4).

Pecatonica senior Lee Vlasak took second in the 55 (:6.97) as he lost by an eyelash - one-tenth of a second.

Albany proved why its cross country team qualified for state, as the Comets had a lot of success in the middle and longer distance races. Tyler Conley finished third place in the 400 (:57.10) and Jake Short was third in the 800 (2:20.83). The Comets won the 1,600 relay (3:49.27) and took fourth in the 3,200 relay.
