WAUSAU - The Albany girls cross country team placed second in the Division 3 Smiley Invitational Saturday in Wausau.

Boscobel edged Albany for the team title 73-83. The Comets were led by junior Ciara Kaderly who won the race in 20 minutes, 1 second. Albany freshman Kirsten Oliver finished 11th (21:44), and freshman Megan Anderson was 16th (22:07). Sophomore teammate Emma Guenther finished 24th (22:35), and Emily Hauri was 31st (22:59).

Albany won the River Valley Invitational two weeks ago, defeating Boscobel.

"I don't think we ran a great team race," Albany coach Tony Brewer said. "We didn't get out very fast. We know this (rivalry) will be week to week. We knew this week it could be the other way. They were ready to go."

In the boys race, Boscobel won the title 52-55 over Rosholt. Albany placed third (68).

Last year Albany tied Rosholt for second place at state but settled for third based on a fifth-runner tiebreaker.

The Comets had three runners break 18 minutes and crack the top 10. Albany senior Tyler Dahl finished seventh (17:34), and his younger brother Josh Dahl was ninth (17:37). Junior teammate Isaac Halverson claimed 10th (17:51). Senior Josh Little, in his first race of the season, finished 20th (18:44), and Connor Trow was 22nd (18:57).

"It was a big improvement from the week before," Brewer said. "We still have work to do."

Little is coming back from an injury.

"We wanted to hold him back and have him run it as a workout," Brewer said. "He's not 100 percent yet. Hopefully, he will get better each week and will get stronger."
