Albany crushes Panthers

ALBANY - The Albany girls basketball team opened the season in dominating fashion by routing Palmyra-Eagle, 70-23, Saturday.

The Comets jumped out to a 21-4 first-quarter lead en route to a 39-9 halftime lead.

Albany had four players in double figures led by junior Sydney Bump, who had a game-high 21 points. Fellow junior Courtney Pfeuti scored 15 points, and Kaitlin Schulz and Hilary Best added 10 each.

Wausau Newman 75, Pecatonica 28

WAUSAU - In a fast-paced game, Wausau Newman out-gunned Pecatonica and handed the Vikings a 75-28 loss in their season opener, Saturday.

Newman outscored the Vikings 22-6 in the first quarter. Newman then erupted for 33 points in the second quarter as the team built an insurmountable 55-13 halftime lead.

Pecatonica senior Kimee Chandler, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit, scored a team-high 15 points to lead the Vikings.

"Newman is an excellent team with a lot of scoring power," Pecatonica coach Tom Wilkins said. "Pecatonica never got on track offensively due to Newman's high pressure defense."

Pecatonica will play its home opener Tuesday night against Highland, followed by New Glarus Thursday night.

South Milwaukee 43, Juda 30

MILWAUKEE - Juda sophomore Ellen Kiser was one rebound away from a triple double Saturday, but the Panthers lost the second-place game in a tournament in South Milwaukee to the host Rockets, 43-30.

Kiser scored a team-high 12 points and had 13 blocked shots and nine rebounds.

South Milwaukee outscored the Panthers 12-4 in the first quarter, and led 29-17 at the half. The Panthers couldn't recover from a 12-point deficit.

Juda sophomore C.J. Dunwiddie scored five points and senior Heather Boeke had four.
