MONROE - Not only did Dave Hirsbrunner's boys overcome some illness and injuries in Tuesday's triple-dual with McFarland and Madison Edgewood at Monroe High School.
They just may have overacheived in the process.
"In order for us to pull out a victory we were going to have to have guys step up," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "That's what happened."
Monroe locked down its victory with three events remaining, eventually defeating the Spartans 78-68 and the Crusaders 98-47.
Four Cheesemakers, Caleb Ahrens, Brett DeNure, Lucas Leu and Tad Christen won multiple events. Ahrens, a freshman, won both the 110-meter hurdles (17 seconds) and the 300 intermediate as well (46.20).
DeNure captured both the 400 (52.30) and the 800 (2:06.30) while Christen leapt his way to greatness when not running the opening leg in the 4x100 relay (47.20). Christen won both the long jump (19 feet, 3.25 inches) and the triple jump (41-4).
Leu, a junior, won the shot put at 46-10 and the discus at 134-0.
Ahrens left the most significant impression on his coach as his performances in both hurdles events were personal bests.
"Caleb is such a coachable kid," Hirsbrunner said. "He wants to learn more and more every day about track and field. He is really going to turn some heads in the future."
McFarland's distance crew gave Monroe the most headaches, but the Cheesemakers' field unit pulled the most weight to lift Monroe to victory and keep the Cheesemakers undefeated in conference action.
CRUISING ON A TUESDAY AFTERNOON
Monroe's Lady Cheesemakers weren't met with the same level of opposition and took full advantage.
Monroe cleaned up the sprint relays and ruled the field events to cruise to a 95.5-50.5 victory over McFarland and a 98-44 decision over Madison Edgewood.
"Once again our girls competed very well tonight," Monroe coach Curt Miller observed. "We were able to take a look at some kids in different events today, and a few girls really showed that they have the ability to help the team in some other areas. "
Sophomore Stephanie Wyss was a member of both the winning 4x100 (54.2 seconds) and 4x200 (1:54.4) relay quartets and also won the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches.
Wyss' classmate Tyreisha Gibson ran the anchor legs on both relay teams and Miller got a kick out of watching sisters Corrine (freshman) and Tessa (sophomore) Frutiger got at it on the second leg of the 4x400 as he tinkered with combinations.
"Both of them are running well," Miller said.
Both the boys and girls squads head to Mazomanie for the Wisconsin Heights Invitational Friday at 4:15 p.m.
