COTTAGE GROVE - The Cheesemakers picked up a rare road win Thursday at Monona Grove, fighting to the end to earn a 3-2 baseball victory.
"When you have a pitcher who is throwing good, you have a chance in any game," Monroe coach Steve Christensen said.
Mike Demianiuk pitched another complete game for Monroe (4-6, 3-1). Demianiuk, who has held a firm fist against the Badger South over the past two seasons, struck out four batters while issuing no walks. According to Christensen, Demianiuk has yet to walk a batter in conference play this season.
Scott Kline (2-for-3) hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning off the Silver Eagles' Beau Goff.
In the bottom half of the inning, Goff singled and Taylor Meyers drove him in with a double.
Monroe picked up two more runs in the top of the fourth. Kris Rieder singled and Matt Whipple walked. Cory Kundert drove both in moments later. Monona Grove scored one more run in the sixth off Demianiuk, but the Eagles could not make a complete comeback.
"Errors didn't hurt us much," Christensen said of the Cheesemakers' two miscues. "One was on a relay throw from the outfield, and the other one ended up not making a difference in the game. We did the things that we had to in order to win."
Monroe plays at McFarland on Friday.
