WATERTOWN - Playing short-handed without four starters due to injuries and family reasons, the Monroe boys soccer team lost to Watertown 7-0 Friday.
The Cheesemakers were missing senior Luke Nicholson, sophomore Aaron Ziolkowski and sophomore Alex Barradas all due to injuries, and junior Nick Schumacher had a family commitment.
"We knew right away it would be tough," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "We really wanted to make sure they didn't get anything easy."
Monroe sophomore Julio Vasquez injured his quad and at one point the Cheesemakers played with 10 players on the field. In soccer games, 11 players usually are on the field at once and playing a man down proved to be a challenge.
"I thought the guys did a good job and enjoyed themselves," Vasquez said. "We moved some guys around and wanted them to have a fun night."
Monroe junior Nick Benkert played some at goalie and had seven saves. Junior Deven Schulte added six saves. The Goslings outshot the Cheesemakers 20-4.
