MADISON - The Monroe boys track team's 3,200-meter relay won the championship at the 75th annual Madison West Class B Relays on Saturday.

The Cheesemaker team of Alex Barenklau, Matt Bush, Ethan Moehn and Syler Stingley won with a time of 8 minutes, 12.73 seconds. Monroe coach Curt Miller said with the 3,200 relay team's performance will probably earn them a berth to the Penn Relays.

"They put themselves in a pretty good position to qualify for that meet," Miller said. "We gave them a time of 8:13 to hit and they hit it. It's exciting that they ran an 8:12. The official invitation won't come until April."

Monroe finished seventh (44 points) at the 21-team meet. Platteville edged La Crosse Logan 63-61 for the title. Badger South Conference rival Monona Grove finished sixth, just one point ahead of the Cheesemakers.

"They (Monona Grove) are a very good big meet team that can score a lot of points," Miller said. "These meets early in the year are a chance to size each other up. We each have our strengths and weaknesses."

Monroe sophomore Jake Hirsbrunner took second in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 1 inch. The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Stingley, Bush, Hirsbrunner and Moehn finished second with a time of 3:32.88, which was about two seconds away from the winning time by Shorewood.

"You have to take into account that we ran without Alex Barenklau who is probably our best 400 runner," Miller said. "To run that fast of a time without our best runner this early in the year is exciting."
