SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk's running back tandem of senior Brody Milz and junior Colby Argall has been like a thunder and lightning combo.

Milz at 6 feet and 215 pounds often seeks contact and looks to bowl over defenders with a punishing running style. Argall relies more on speed and agility, but both of them spearhead the Warriors into an explosive offense that is averaging 51.3 points per game.

Milz has rushed for 1,568 yards, 27 touchdowns, is averaging 120.6 yards per game and 9.6 yards per carry. Argall has posted 1,432 yards with 25 TDs, 110.2 yards per game and 10.4 yards per carry.

"Brody is the bigger runner who just runs through people," Argall said. "I'm quick and have decent speed. We go together like salt and pepper."

The Warriors are averaging 346.4 rushing yards per game. Black Hawk coach Cory Milz sees the strengths both Brody Milz and Argall bring to the backfield.

"We are very fortunate to have a good one-two punch," Cory Milz said. "Colby is shifty and really quick. Colby is really good at making people miss and cutting back."

Cory Milz has seen both running backs develop and improve throughout the season.

"The weakness for Colby was he had to get more physical and get tougher making kick-out blocks and running up the middle," he said. "(Argall) has gotten better every week. Brody had to improve his speed and break off longer runs. He has done that. They both are improved and are complete backs."

Argall rushed for 140 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns in a 56-8 WIAA Division 7 state semifinal win over Fall River.

"Teams can't just look to take one of us away because the other one will have a big game," Brody Milz said. "Bangor will have to take both of us away to beat us."

Black Hawk senior quarterback Michael Flanagan has enjoyed playing with two explosive backs that keep the chains moving. He points out their vision and breakaway abilities.

"Brody is a heavy hitter," Flanagan said of Milz. "If you want to get him down, he will run you over. Colby is very fast. He can make you miss and break your ankles."

The Warriors' offensive line includes senior Nathan Hull, sophomore Avery Baumgartner, senior Ben Holland, and juniors Mitchell Quinn and Jayden Stietz, plus senior tight end Jason Treuthardt.

"Our line is the center of everything," Brody Milz said. "That is where games are won - in the trenches. They are not the biggest line, but they are all really strong, squat over 300 pounds and hit hard."

Quinn has been a fixture in the Warriors' high-powered offense and he sees the strengths in both backs.

"Brody is a hard-nosed runner and one-on-one it will take more than one person to bring him down," Quinn said. "Colby is really quick and he has some moves. He's good at making you miss."

Quinn enjoys taking on the challenge each week of opening running lanes. He understands it doesn't always take a perfect block to open up a big play.

"It's great to open up holes because we know they have a good shot to get into the end zone," he said. "Every week we work on our technique (blocking). When you get deeper into the tournament, the more important the technique becomes."
