3 1st-team for girls

MONROE - The Monroe girls basketball team had three players named first-team Badger South All-Conf-erence for the second straight year.

The three Monroe players named first-team all-conference were junior Sydney Hilliard, junior Emily Benz-schawel and senior Sydney Mathiason. Hilliard, who averaged 22.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, was one of four players to garner unanimous all-conference honors. She was also named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association all-state team Monday by unanimous decision.

Benzschawel was the Cheesemakers' second leading scorer (14.5 ppg) and Mathiason was the team's third leading scorer (10.5 ppg, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game).

The Monroe trio of starters led the Cheesemakers to a 24-3 record and a second straight Badger South Conference championship. Monroe made a run to state for the second straight year and lost a WIAA Division 2 state semifinal game to New Berlin Eisenhower 67-63.

The three other players in the conference who were unanimous all-conference include Monona Grove junior McKenna Warnock, Madison Edgewood senior Caitlin Link and Oregon senior Ellen McCorkle.

Monroe sophomore Grace Tostrud was named honorable mention all-conference. Tostrud (8.6 ppg) made a team-high 40 3-pointers this season. She was second on the team in 3-point percentage with at least 12 attempts (32.3 percent) behind Hilliard who led the team at 38.7 percent (24 of 62).
