2nd half rally vs. Barneveld keeps AP atop Six Rivers

ARGYLE — Argyle-Pecatonica faced a big challenge against Barneveld on Monday, Jan. 19 in Six Rivers East Conference action. The 78ers trailed at halftime 25-22, but outscored the Eagles 35-23 in the second half to get their eighth straight win, 57-48.

AP was led by senior Kylie Butler and junior Brooke Wellnitz as both scored 22 points. Senior Loretta Tisch also helped in the scoring column with nine points. Free throw shooting was also a big factor for AP as they went 23-32 from the line. Wellnitz did her part by making 12-14 free throws.

Barneveld was led in scoring by seniors Izzy Durst and Hannah Esch. Both had 13 points.

Argyle-Pecatonica (14-1, 8-0) is ranked No. 2 in the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll in Division 5. AP was scheduled to host Albany-Monticello (15-1, 7-1) in a battle for first place in the Six Rivers East on Thursday, Jan. 22.


Albany-Monticello 74, Juda 24

JUDA — Four players scored in double figures to lead the Albany-Monticello Space Stallions to a 74-24 win over the Juda Panthers in Six Rivers East conference girls basketball on Monday, Jan. 19.

Senior Molly Olson was the top scorer in AM’s attack with 19 points. Senior Molly Olson was next with 11 points. Senior Emerson Butts and sophomore Emma Thomson each contributed 10 points for AM. Junior Kennedi Lerch was the leading scorer for the Juda Panthers with nine points.

A highly anticipated Six Rivers East Conference game is on Thursday, Jan. 22 when Albany-Monticello (15-1, 7-1) travels to Argyle-Pecatonica (14-1, 8-0). Juda (3-12, 0-8) has a nonconference game on Monday, Jan. 26 at home against Johnson Creek.


Monroe 37, 

Wis. Heights 33

MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers played their third game in four days and came from behind to win 37-33 over the Wisconsin Heights Vanguards 37-33 on Monday, Jan. 19.

It was a slow start to the game on some tired legs for the Cheesemakers. Trailing 21-11 with under a minute to go in the first half, sophomore Brynlee Scace hit a deep three to close to 21-14 at halftime and swing some momentum going into the second half. Coming out of halftime, Monroe put on some stifling defense, only allowing two players to score in the second half for a combined 12 points. 

In the second half, junior Braylee Friedrich went coast to coast for a layup to take the lead, and Monroe was able to control the rest of the game. Scace led the Cheesemakers with 15 points and senior Alexis Gertsch scored 12 points to help the Cheese snap a three game losing streak.

Monroe (4-9, 1-6 RVC-Valley) has a conference game scheduled on Thursday, Jan. 22 at Big Foot.


Brodhead 53, Black Hawk 23

BRODHEAD — The Brodhead Cardinals won their third straight game and tied a season low for points allowed with a 53-23 win over the Black Hawk Warriors on Tuesday, Jan. 20 in nonconference girls basketball.

Senior Alecia Dahl paced the Cardinals with 23 points and freshman Ella Olson scored nine points in the win for Brodhead. During their three game winning streak, the Cardinals have allowed their opponents just 26.3 points per game.

Only three players scored for the Warriors. Senior Mya Milz had 17 points, senior Kiera Brunner had two points, and senior Emily Figi had two points.

Brodhead (13-2, 6-2 Rock Valley-Rock) hosted Whitewater in a Rock Valley Conference crossover game while Black Hawk (4-10, 1-7 Six Rivers East) traveled to Barneveld for a Six Rivers East Conference game on Thursday, Jan. 22.
