Werner Vogel

Werner Vogel, age 87, of Monroe, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, November 5, 2023. Werner was born on June 8, 1936 on the home farm in Monroe Township, the son of Albert and Anna (Volkart) Vogel.  He graduated from Monroe High School in 1954. Werner served in the US Army from 1955 until 1957, enlisting voluntarily through the draft board. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper (because it paid more) and was later transferred to the 11th Airborne Division in Germany. After returning home from the Army, Werner worked at Klondike Cheese Factory before taking over the family farm in 1960. He was united in marriage to Wilma Canon on March 25, 1961 at St. John’s United Church of Christ. In 1991, Werner and Wilma’s son, Roger took over the farm and Werner began working for Ken’s Agri Service until he officially retired in 2018.

Werner was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Smock Valley Watershed, Holstein Association, Monroe Township Committee, and served as a 4-H leader for over 40 years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching them grow up to be wonderful young adults. He loved animals, baking rosettes and bratzli, fixing things, spending time outdoors, and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma Vogel; son, Roger (Lori) Vogel; daughter, Rita (Matt) Krebs, all of Monroe; three grandchildren, Chelsea (Olivia) Roe of Albuquerque, NM, Kyle Krebs, Nicole Krebs, both of Monroe; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Elizabeth (Glenn) Siegenthaler, Rosa (Alvin) Buholzer, Margaret (Robert) Sonderegger; and two brothers, John Vogel and Walter (Joyce) Vogel.
