Shirley A. Wiegel, age 90, of Monroe, died Sunday, September 1, 2024 at SSM Monroe Hospice Home. Shirley was born on March 18, 1934 in Dunn Center, N.D., the daughter of Clarence and Florence (Gille) Knudson. She graduated from Gratiot High School in 1952 and earned a degree in nursing from Marion College in Fond du Lac. She was employed as a registered nurse at St. Clare Hospital and The Monroe Clinic from August, 1955 until retiring in 2006. She also worked at the Monroe Manor and Pleasant View Nursing Home. Shirley and Bernard C. Wiegel were united in marriage on May 4, 1957 in Gratiot. He preceded her in death on October 11, 1997.

She was an active member of St. Victor Catholic Church, Monroe Clinic Auxiliary, and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. She served as nurse coordinator for the Apostolate to the Handicapped for 50 years and for many years volunteered in acquiring afghans for Monroe Hospice.

Shirley is survived by three children, Michelle Wiegel Gessert (Andy) of Monroe, Mark (Lesley) Wiegel of Green Bay, Marcia Couvillion of Pineville, LA; former son-in-law, Glen Couvillion and children Marcy Fluitt, David Couvillion and their families; two grandchildren, Jackie Gessert (Dan), Micah Couvillion (Lauren) and their son who is due anytime, Maverick. In addition to her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, and four brothers, John, Leonard, Robert, and William Knudson.

A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday September 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church, with Father David Carrano officiating. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorials are suggested in Shirley’s name to the Msgr.
