Ronald Edward “Pops” Gowdy, at age 69, passed away on December 22, 2025, in his home in Monroe, Wisconsin, with his family and beloved pets. Born on June 10, 1956, in St. Augustine, Florida, Ron lived a life marked by overcoming obstacles, dedication to his work, and a deep love for his wife and children.
Ron began his journey of service and learning early in life. In 1973, he joined the United States Coast Guard and served until 1977 as an E4 Petty Officer (3rd Class), stationed near the Bering Strait in Alaska. During his time in the military, he earned a trade degree as an electrician—an early step that would lay the foundation for a long and accomplished career.
Ron often downplayed his academic achievements. For instance, Ron resisted being labeled an “engineer,” even though he had four engineering certifications (sonar, electrical, signal, and computer). But those who knew him understood how impressive his education was. After leaving the military, he obtained a signal engineering degree from a first-class railroad and later earned a Bachelor's Degree in computer engineering from Herzing College. And with the support of his devoted wife, Kristi, Ron went on to receive his Master’s Degree in project management from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Ron devoted over four decades to the railroad industry as a signal engineer and project manager. His unique combination of hands-on experience and academic achievement made him a respected expert in his field. Among the many projects he contributed to throughout his career, one of his proudest accomplishments was working on the RTD railroad station in Denver—a vital link connecting downtown Denver to its airport. Ron retired in 2024.
Beyond his professional achievements, Ron was known for his sometimes hard-to-understand southern accent and his corny sense of humor. A master of dad jokes and mixed metaphors, he often said things like “even a blind squirrel is right twice a day,” bringing laughter to those around him. He cherished time spent with loved ones and found joy in simple pleasures—traveling to new places, listening to blues music, lifting weights, relaxing with his beloved pups, and more recently, teaching himself how to play the guitar.
Ron is survived by his wife and loving partner of over 25 years, Kristi Pagenkopf; by his daughters: Savannah Gowdy, Emelia Gowdy, Chelsey (Karl) Bettinger, Shelbey Metcalf (Daniel O’Brien); and by his grandsons, Holden Wilhelm and Liam Phillips. His daughters will always remember him as a generous father who pushed them to be strong and self-reliant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Doris Gowdy; and by his brothers Richard Gowdy, Tommy Holmes, and Mike Gowdy.
Ron’s life, which if fully written out, would read more like a tall tale, can hardly be encapsulated in this short writing. We hope you will come cherish his unique journey with us at a celebration of life on November 7, 2026. Details to follow. Memorials in Ron’s name are suggested to Green County Humane Society, N3156 Highway 81, Monroe, WI 53566. Condolences may be shared at www.newcomerfuneralhome.net
